What kind of compression settings do you guys use on crunchy distorted rock guitars? For instance take a song like Vertigo by U2, not really a heavy song or a band, but it's still a killer guitar sound.

What attack, release, thresholds etc settings would u use?

I have two questions for everybody:

Just wondering how if you do make use of multi band compression on single items in the mix as opposed to the overal mix of something..

ok, I make hip hop music, and i wanna squeeze all my vocals together alittle bit on a bus in Sonar 3.

what's a good theshold/ratio or level of compression for this. I dont want them to get to squashed, but get tighter together.

I've just started usin the Waves C4 multi-band compressor again, a lil... mainly on vocalz
would 1 also put a regular(broadband) compressor after that or is it enuff 4 just the multi-band(C4) alone?

I record hip hop . And this is, I guess a general question during mixing; or use with/after using multi-band compression.

i'd be Micing each drum individually so they will just be for cymbals. is it worth getting a 2 channel compressor? i'll probably use an ART DMPA for a preamp.

I really like the new Digi EQ III, but the program is severley lacking in a useable compressor and limiter plugin . Can anyone recommend affordable (or free!) plugins for the MAC OSX? I'm particularly interested in a multiband compression plugin for the main stereo bus.

Just starting out and have compression question...My Boss br1600 has a compressor on individual channels for vocals, but there is no numbers labeled on the attack, threshold, and oh... I forgot the 3rd choice. In thinking "Clock" terms where would these settings need to be for 2:1 or 3:1 compression ratio? I hope you understood this cuz i sure as hell don't... Thanks!

after i use a compressor there is a level drop. it is normal of couse:) But how should I adjust the volume of a track to compensate a level drop? With compressor's gain control? But what amout? Or it is better to do with track's volume slider?

I am current reading the Mixing Engineers Handbook, fricking sweet. I have a question about compression. In the book the author keeps making statements like the following.

"Hit the compressor fairly hard, at least 10db or more if it sounds good"
