DAW Compression Methods
When you guys track through outboard compression into a DAW, are you mostly adding a little here and there to avoid peaks, and then adding most of your compression with plugs during mixing, or are you trying to dial in most of the sound you want up front with the hardware, so to avoid needing lot's-O plug comps later on?

Guitar Compression
If you have a song with a lot of different guitar parts that need taming to blend together better, would it make any sense to put them all into a sub-group and use one main compressor on them all, or would you treat them all separately?
:w:

compression on vocals
Hello all,
I am tracking some vocals and have been trying to figure out how to set my compression. The singer's volume has lots of fluctuation in it due to his style, so I want to be careful not to over-compress the signal before putting it to disk. This is the setup I am using: (now don't laugh please, this is the best I can afford at the moment...)

compression question (hey that rhymes)
ok heres the example:
threshold: 15db
ratio: 5:1
so does that mean every 5db the signal goes over 15 it allows 1db? so it would be 16db. right?
heres another:
threshold: 10db
ratio: 3:1
so every 3db the signal goes over 10 it allows 1db. so it would be 11db. right?

Is Compression a Crutch?
How many times have you guys mixed something and thought, do I really need all this compression? Should I have more compression? Is this song good or do I just like the compression?
Thoughts, flames, etc? Don't tell me what your favorite compressor is.

Compression techniques and tricks
How important are quality compressors to the mixdown process for rock n roll? I love the subtle ways that a compressor can fool the ear, but I'm far from an expert on some of the tricks of the trade.
Which compression techniques do you find to be the most useful? Are there certain tricks you almost ALWAYS use?
