New to digital recording, stupid ?s

Hi all, new guy here. I know nothing at all about digital recording, but would like to get a recorder soon. So I've got a few questions:

1) Are all recorders compatible with all others? My buddy has a fostex mr-8 if he burned a CD could I pop that in another brand recorder and record on that? I'm talking about the under $1,200 Korg /fostex/boss type.

Digital recording consule or a upgraded sound card?

I am not sure whether or not to buy a nice sound card and run directly into my computer or buy a digital recorder. I will give you my equipment info and what it is exactly I am trying to accomplish.

P4 - 3.2 Processor
80 - gig hardrive
1 - GB or PC 3200/400 mhz DDR ram

Sound card - SoundMAX Digital Audio (came with computer)

Hi, I am new to recording and need some direction, so here are some questions for the experts out there. I am using Cubase to mix and Wavelab to master:

1. IN mixing, How much headroom should I factor in when recording my separate tracks? Do I just try for the closest level to 0 db without clipping or do I factor some decibals like -5db or -10db.
