How to connect external drive - laptop - firewire interface

I just made the plunge into firewire recording, just ordered a 16 channel firewire mixer. I am really nervous about the latency issue, I had a standalone unit which does not have that problem. How do I go about connecting a external firewire hard drive and the interface together on a laptop? Most recommend an external drive for recording.

PCI vs. . FIREWIRE

My recording setup is so close to comploete all I need is a way to get my signal into the computer. I have a studio projects B1 going into a VTB1 tube preamp, And now I am having a hard time deciding between firewire and PCI, as it seems I think firewire would be a faster clearer connection without all the crappy driver support and whatnot..

questions on firewire interface

hello, i am a musician, but new to recording work. i wish to do a professional quality recording in the most affordable way. so i prefer to buy a firewire interface rather than a usb interface. a Yamaha personal firewire interface GO46 has caught my attention. it has two firewire ports, both are 6-pin type. however, my dell laptop has only one 1394 firewire port, it is a 4-pin firewire port.
