Recording direct through Mackie Onyx 400f

Hi guys. I'm trying to recreate as faithfully as possible the sound of a real miked amp. I'm recording my guitar (Epiphone Black Beauty) direct through the instrument inputs of my Mackie Onyx 400f, and using Guitar Rig 2 as an emulator. Of course, the tone isn't the same as recording a real amp, but it sounds too "direct".

Mackie 1604vlz pro vs Mackie 1642 VLZ3

What do you think? Should I buy a Mackie 1604 VLZ pro for $599.00 or the new Mackie 1642-VLZ3 for $599.00. I realize the "pro" has more inputs but I have heard complaints about the "ribbons" coming loose. I have been looking for reviews on the 1642 but can't find any. I am looking for a good mixer with 8 direct outs to use with my firepod. What do you suggest? Thanks! :?

Yamaha HS80m or the Mackie HR624?

What would you pick and why, Yamaha HS80m or the Mackie HR624?

I am shopping for my first set of real monitors that I will use mostly to mix folk/rock and roll. The room that I will use to mix is a 12x16 drywalled room that I have a few thin eggcrate mattress tacked to the walls, so pretty much not really soundproofed at all.

Are Mackie SRM-350 powered monitors really studio quality?

Ok I hope I'm not asking a stupid question but when Mackie claims that the SRM powered monitors are of "studio" quality are they kidding? Could those speakers actually be used to do basic tracking, and mixing? Cause at the same price as the Mackie studio monitors it sure would be sweet if one could use them for both stage and studio.

What would macgyver do?
