I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I was wondering if someone could give me a dumbed down explanation of what exactly a microphone preamp is, what its benefits are over plugging directly into to an interface (such as an MBox), essentially how to use it, and what some decent mic preamp for not a lot of money.

I am a lead vocalist in a LOUD band. We have only been playing for about a year so needless to say we don't have the best equipment yet, so I'm looking to upgrade. Our biggest problem in my opinion is that we play way louder than we need to and the venues we play and our equipment can't handle the high volumes.

Mic Pre Question...

I have a U87 ai and I was thinking about getting a UA 710-Twin Finity to add some warmth to vocals. I'm a big fan of the early 90s Boyz II Men End of the Road/I'll Make Love to You/On Bended Knee sound. I talked to their tech and he said he thinks they used a U87 but I didn't think to ask him what preamps they might have used.

Just uploaded it. I think this one will do well for the youtube channel.

I have the Maudio project mix and would like to replace the preamps! What pre's do you recommend that i should replace it with?

I just transitioned from a Firepod (circa 2006) to a Firestudio Mobile and for some reason the microphone sounds horribly muffled when as far as I know I haven't changed a thing besides the preamp. There's also some static on that track, as well, so I feel like something glaring is definitely not right here.

I'm currently using a PreSonus FireBox for an interface and I'd like to try my hand in building some basic outboard preamps for my dynamic mics. Opamps work fine, no need for tubes. I would like (but not necessary) one design that is relatively transparent and one that is more of a 'vintage' or coloring preamp.

What's better? A $500 mic and a $100 preamp, or a $100 mic and a $500 preamp? What I'm wondering is what's more important to get a decent sound? The mic or the preamp? Is the overall equipment more dependent on one over the other? Thanks for the help. If this topic has already been discussed, please point me to the thread.
