software, for mixing only
i have a software question. i do all of my recording on a Tascam 2488, and just got a laptop that i want to use for mixing those tracks. I don't use any MIDI or samples or anything, and want to mix just recorded audio (acoustic guitar, bass, drums, piano...). i've got decent powered monitors, and have a $200 budget for software.

Software Mixing
Hello all,
I'm a beginner at recording in general. I'm doing it as a hobbyist. I've been learning a lot about sound in general working PA's at church, but this particular problem I think it's how I'm using the software. I use Sonar 4 with an M-Audio Firewire Solo w/ a Audio Buddy Mic Pre. Works very well for me as I am learning.

Help with mixing!
I'm a newbie here. great forum by the way. I'm learning the art of mixing "inside the box"( inside of the software). I use both pro tools and sonar. I record straight into PreSonus firepod which has nice pres. I was disappointed with my early test mixes. I can't get vocals to sit in well with the track...any tips anyone?

Question about mixing
Hi,
i mix in Samplitude 7. Ater setting levels, master valume hits about +0.5 db. So, I am over 0 db. I don't hear any distortions, but is it OK?
What should I do?
Should I trim levels of individuals track or master volume?

Mixing Vocals overtop of Instrumentals... Help!
Sort-of-quick question...
I've been recording some mixtape cuts for a local rap group...
And basically they take instrumentals off of vinyl, or from mp3 format, and they freestyle over top of it.
I know its not easy to get a great sound off of this since i have no control of the instruments seperately... the instrumental is just in stereo L-R form.

levels while tracking and mixing?
I record into a Emu 1212m using Cubase SX.
TRACKING QUESTION: Should the input channel be set to 0db?
should I push the preamp level up untill I'm almost redlining the input channel or is that to much?
Mixing QUESTION: how hot should the signal be on the output meter?
thanks in advance,
Mark

smarter mixing re 'placement' - help?
Hi. I am interested in learning more about cues the ear uses to localise a sound, so I can improve my stereo mixing techniques.
I know the very basics of IAD, ITD, HRTF, pinna shadow effect etc, but not the details. I want to know more about how to use EQ, panning and level balance to suggest placement rather than reaching for the nearest reverb/delay. Anyone relate?

DJ & Mixing
I have a DJ mix I put on CD. I want to know how to easily without spending a lot money, can I mix a 3-4 min. sample of the whole CD each song in the sample mix. I have basic Denon DN-4000 dual CD player and Stanton SK-Six basic mixer. I don't have any special effects machine or anything. Maybe I can rent some effects machine to use. I don't know.
