Is this a mixing or a mastering issue?
Due to the everlasting budget-problem, I have to master most of my work myself.
When mastering, I first listen to the mix on various systems, and make notes on the sound.
Allmost everytime I find the mix lacking highs from about 4k. This is confermed by the Waves PAZ analyzer, showing a gentle rolloff in the high frequenties.

Going from compact mixers to mixing consoles
Right now I am using an Allen & Heath 16 channel compact mixer. If I were to purchase a console in, Ohhh say 1 to 2 years, what would be some other the best ones to look at first?I do mostly harder music (lots of guitar).
Also...if the cheapest line is the $1000 to $2500 (stuff that I am using now).

DA conversion, sound mixing, hires audio out from DAW query
Hello all,
First time posting but I've been lurking for a while. Thanks in advance for all the answers you've already given me unknowingly!
I'm about to begin sound recording, design, and mixing on an indie film (I've posted this query in the audio for video forum as well...) and am finalizing my gear list.
What do you all think of this setup:
Mixing, Plugins, Memory. How much is enough?
I am about to begin mixing my project in DP 4.5. I run OSX on a PowerMac G4 dual processors that rate at 867 mhz each. My memory currently stands at 768 MB

mixing to -6db (optimal approach?)
Ever since I started recording, I've recorded tracks to peak at -6db or so.
When everything's mixed the way I like, I wind up with a master bus that's peaking at, say... -3 to -6db or so.
I know a lot of guys say you should have a master bus peaking much lower than this (for mastering purposes).

software, for mixing only...
i have a software question. i do all of my recording on a Tascam 2488, and just got a laptop that i want to use for mixing those tracks. I don't use any MIDI or samples or anything, and want to mix just recorded audio (acoustic guitar, bass, drums, piano...). i've got decent powered monitors, and have a $200 budget for software.

Mixing down vocals
this is should be an easy ? for you guru's. .is it better to mixdown or bounce vocals before you mixdown all of your tracks or is it better to just mixdown all at once?
