suggestions for a portable recorder

Hi!
I'm thinking about hanging around recording sounds (animals, cars, noises, whatever) to try and play with them. And so i need a portable recorder... 2 tracks ought to be enough (mono or stereo miking), and needs to be plain simple to use.
I was thinking about a minidisc... any suggestions?
By the way, can I use other mics than those designed for the minidisc?

Best portable interface for PC Laptop?

What's good? Just got a laptop I can use while traveling to work on mixes while on the go. Will be moving to an Ibook in the future, but right I'm on PC running Logic Platinum 5.5.1. Any suggestions on a GOOD interface, portable, as I travel a lot and would like to take in progress mixes with me to keep things moving.

Thanks

portable project studio gear...

I'm wanting to put together a PC based portable project studio to record demos for bands on location (where they rehearse, live shows,etc.). Here's the gear I'm looking at. I'd like to know if anyone thinks I'd be making a mistake with any of these items! Thanks!

Preamp: SM pro audio PR8 MkII 8 channel preamp

What to use for Portable/in studio recording?

Well ok. I dont want to go much past the 500 dollar range. I want to be able to record into my Latop for live shows or home use, and use the same system in my studio on my larger computer to record bands. So I require either USB or Firewire interface. I dont want to get a system that requires a proprietary pcmcia or pci card, becuase I want to be able to hook it up to anything.
