I am in the process of collecting some Yamaha PM 1000 Channel strips & output transformers to convert to stand alone mic preamp's.

Looking to expand the studio...

What flavor of mic preamps are best suited for the following:

The big, upfront, not bright but extremely clear vocal that cuts through and sits on top?

Giant guitars with all the fatness and sparkle anyone could want that somehow dominate the mix and yet get out of the way of the vocals?

after recording for a year with just an sm58 (and no pre), i recently bought a new condenser mic. instead of just buying a phantom power adapter for it (which i initially wanted) the salesperson convinced me to get a basic preamp for a few more bucks.

I just bought a 1-channel outboard preamp and a 2-channel outboard compressor.

My question is: how do I use both the compressor and preamp at the same time?

Do I use the effects send/return inputs? Or do I use a ton of XLR cables going from my mics to my preamp to my compressor then finally to my multitracker?

Specifically, I need a,"worthy" mic preamp that won't break the bank.

I've been looking for some decent quality preamps vs price.
I'm ready to spend 600.00$ for a TWO channel preamps and i have in mind the APHEX 207, but was not able to find some reviews.
ART: the vendor at the music store in town told me that his first choices on that range would be the ART Gold. Personnally i own a MP and not satisfied.
