Recording strings to tape or digital
I have found on a number of CDs where orchestra
was recorded digitally and mixed to digital
a metallic coloration discernible in the strings in contrast to older recordings recorded to analog and remastered digitally.

My tape's screeching.
I'm working on some 1/4" reels to CD for a client and am having problems. The tape is Ampex 9472, circa late 1975 running at 15 ips. I'm using an Otari MX5050 for playback. They're turning out to be some of those old reels that don't want to cooperate.

Pro Tools HD vrs Analog Tape
I’m working at a studio with a Studer tape machine and a Trident series 80 board. I am about to start mixing and there is no automation. I have a Pro Tools HD3 system, that although its sounds great, in an A, B comparison to the tape, if the tape is a 10, the pro tools is a 9.25.

Back from Tape Op Con 03
I had a great time in Portland at the Tape Op Conference. A lot of great people that were really interested in bettering there craft and not just looking at the latest reverb unit.
The mastering Panel went well. From the response me and the other engineers were getting it seems like people got a lot out of it.

It should be a very good show. And the weather must be better than it is in NYC. I will give you guys a full report when I get back.

converting from tape to CD
I've got what is probably a simple question.
I'm in the process of converting my band's old live shows from audio tape (regular store bought tapes) to CD. I'm recording into SoundForge 5.0 and just burning it out onto CD. Should I record at 88.2k-24 bit stereo or is 44.1-16 bit mono fine?
thanks,
Nick
