Deep voice...tracking tips?

Hey, I have been rapping, recording and mixing myself for a couple years now and I am always looking to better my ears and my technique. Even if you may not like rap my questions are pretty general. First of all, we only have one vocal chain available to record through (very basic home setup) and we record in a treated room so the vocals are pretty dry (no room acoustics).

Best pre for my type of voice

Hello all

I am new to this forum. I am recording my own CD on pro tools at my home studio) mastered at ludwig's place this summer (saved up for that). I had a pal's api preamp but he took it with him to California.

I have a RODE ntk microphone (which I know is not "high end" but I happen to like it). Am considering the upgrade to a u87 soon.

1950s and 1960s Voice-overs

I'd love to capture that 1950s/60s Voice-over sound you hear on all the old short films. You know...the old documentaries, or instructional videos. Plenty on archive.org to sift through. They always begin with the heavy orchestra, then comes Mr. Voiceover.

It's a very distinct sound, other than just the vocal styling itself. Does anyone happen to know how to recreate such a thing?
