I have Superior Drummer 2.0 with the Metal Foundry expansion. I am not sure what program yet to start recording with. But first I would like to build a computer before I do anything. So if you guys can please recommend computer parts to get (I'm 18 and have a limited budget I'm trying to get the most bang for the buck) I honestly know nothing but I want to make this happen I am compeltly motivated to become the best I can possibly be at recording. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Digidesign-Pro-Tools-Mbox-Mini-Package?sku=702525 I am starting out with the mbox mini 2 recording budle. Any recommendations or help would GREATLY be apprecaited. thanks

Which parts are you asking for advice on? Are you building a pc or are you meaning advice on interface options and/or DAW options?

If it is the former, then if you are building your own we will need more info like budget, proposed track count, plugin usage etc.

If the latter then we need to know type(s) of music and how many individual channels you need. Most mid level interfaces come with some version of a DAW. If purchasing a DAW seperately then Reaper is a good option with very very reasonable price. Mackie's Tracktion 3 is probably the most intuitive to begin with and may be a good option too unless you have some specific needs better served by another DAW.

Fill us in a little more.

"If you're going DIGI then spend the time at the Digi User Conference DUC to get DIGI's specs. They are very specific re: what you can and can't use."

This can't be emphasized enough! I have encountered a great deal of frustration with this very point! In our case, ProTools M-Powered will not recognize M-Box 2. A review of ProTools compatibility reveals M-Box works with LE while our ProjectMix works with M-Powered.

Do you feel the need to build a PC? Are you against going Mac? I know I came a long way with Mac and Garageband before finding the limits and moving on. Most if not all of my experience with Garageband has at least made me aware of certain things when migrating to ProTools and Logic. Plus Garage band is actually very simple to get started with, and that success can help drive you to reach for more.

to TheJackAttack my budget on a computer is about 800 max. track meaning how many people recoring? i only need to have a mic input and a 1/4" input for guitars and bass. I have superior drummer because im not going to have the space or money to purchase drum mics and be able to afford a sound card that can hold that many mics. The music I plan on recording is going to be Hardcore/Death Metal/Djent and some Rap. I just checked out Reaper and that looks honestly sick as hell but just like superior drummer i have a cracked version as a temp until i get this thing goin pretty much all the software i need i can get. Also the person that reccomended that i get the mbox mini 2 recording bundle was these two people who do home recording please check out the quality of the recording and the drums which are all programed using superior drummer 2.0 and let me know what i need to do to get that quality

to RedStache i dont know what going DIGI is. I dont feel the need to go with PC but i feel its the most affordable computer i can go with for NOW. i looked at macs and theyre outta my price range. and i can build a quad-core computer with really good specs for 650. also the mbox mini 2 recording bundle comes with pro tools not sure which version. but like i said previously i can get any software i want and i apologize for the multiple postings i dont know what happened

to hueseph like i said though its a temp thing until i can afford it.

Completely glossed over that...

Dude, get a cheap or freely downloadable program [[url=http://[/URL]="http://www.simtel.n…"](like this one)[/]="http://www.simtel.n…"](like this one)[/], save your money, then use whatever comes bundled with the I/O you buy.

The free (and cheap ones) won't teach you any less than the expensive ones. Spend half as much as your talking about on the computer and save the rest for the HW/SW.

Don't get yourself kicked out of here too quickly - there's way too much to learn here. It's only going to take a few more badly thought out posts on your part, trust me.

Think long and hard before you hit the Submit button. Red pill or Blue pill?

Why is it that if you are 18 and a musician "pouring your heart and soul" into something that theft is any less of crime? Oh I murdered someone but it's OK I'm a young guitar player so "honestly" it is ok. Remember the people that work on software pour their hearts and souls into their work. What if you were finally to produce a CD, years of work thousands and thousands of $s in studio time, CD reproduction costs, distribution and marketing and everybody stole it from the store, oh yeah because they are young, I forgot that would make it OK.

GET A GRIP ON ETHICS WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

Right on, right on, right on!

Think about the piracy! Do you intend to work for free?

You really do get what you pay for, trust me! Mac will come with enough to get you started and carry you a long way. A good PC will SUPPORT whatever else you do.

The key to my post is to suggest that you plan your course carefully. We failed to investigate and are experiencing complications because of it, like having a piece of hardware we will probably spend more time or money to use!

In short, a decent computer and the free software you pick up with hardware is enough. You probably got ProTools LE with the M-Box, ProTools that is the consumer grade, mostly meaning it is minus the big collection of plugins.

Rock On!!!!

to jg49 i apologize that you feel that way man. but honestly like i said its a temp thing until i can afford it. and yes i do put a lot of time and money into my music. but i let all of my fans download our music for free, because you know why music is stolen everyday especially from the underground scene. its pointless to sell demos for a little extra cash. we make our money as a band from selling merch(t shirts, hats, basketball shorts, thongs, booty shorts) and we do pretty damn good. and i think with a lot of hard work and motivation i can build a decent home studio. so i do understand where youre coming from and i do think about the peopel who put a lot of work into the programs that i take. but like when i download music i use it for preview purposes only. so i apologize to everyone on here that i have offended i mean nothing buy it, but i am broke fellas i dont have a full time job i make my money by doing gigs and selling merch! but i am starting a job at a warehouse next week so ill be buying these programs sooner than you think!

xBobx "to jg49 i apologize that you feel that way man."
You're sorry I feel that way! I sincerely doubt that I am alone in these sentiments, so let's ask the other members here, is cracked, pirated, unlicensed end user software theft?
All the rest of the things you said, it's only temporary, I'm broke, I let people download my music free (completely your choice), etc. is only excuses and self entitlement ( like "I'm special because I....) I'm not encouraged that you are going to "GET THIS."

im not saying its not theft and im not trying to justify myself. im stating the truth. im not here to argue guys im trying to educate my self. i thought what this was about i asked a question trying to learn. and i said from the get go its temporary. back off dude there no reason to try and get your point across because its obvious. but youre honestly going to tell me youve never done anythign illegal and havnt stolen? first off superior drummer 2.0 is 120 bucks, when i have that laying around, guess what im going to buy it i get customer support and i dont have to worry about the program crashing on me or worry about bugs. i dont want a pirated version because of this. you think i want to record other bands and then uh oh i cant because the company caught up with the cracked version and then the program doesnt work. if it makes you feel better im buying superior drummer 2.0 with the "metal foundry expansion" on friday. and i dont have my computer to start recording. so right now its a on piece of crap computer for trail and error man. so please just get off my case about it dude. thats all it is. i am doing this to PREVIEW the software. is there any harm in that really? i dont want to spend money on a software that i figure out a month later that i completely hate it. thats why i came here so you guys can help me decide on how i should go about building this computer. cmon man lets honestly get past this, because i am not a fan of arguing over the internet its childish. if superior drummer had a thirty day trail where i can do everything i would have done that and not gone with getting a pirated version! becuase honestly pirated anything is RISKY i dont wanna mess up my computer. so man im sorry i offended you and i HOPE you accept my apology. but i will not argue anymore because i said what i have to say its the truth and i dont have to prove myself to anyone i dont even know and especially on the internet.

i dont have to prove myself to anyone i dont even know and especially on the internet.

Yes, but you are asking for help from "people you don't even know on the internet". Many of us who have spent a lifetime in the music industry grew up with ethics and have managed to maintain them.

Quite frankly, you're right you don't have to prove yourself, you've already told us enough and tried to justify it enough for those of us who don't have a whole lot of patience for wankers to already write you off. If you'd like to continue your ridiculous "everyone is doing it" argument, stop asking questions, use the search button, or go away.

If instead, you'd like to use the excellent advice you've been given and possibly LEARN to appreciate that your position is not defensible among anyone other than like-minded pirates, there may be hope. I can assure you it will not be tolerated at RO and you will find yourself in the company of others that don't find the waters too friendly.

Peace,

Phil
