Hola!
Almost done with my new DAW. Just one more question:
My Zalman 7700Cu CPU cooler can do 1000 - 2000 rpm. According to the Zalman website it should be safe to run at 1000rpm for all processors. (From what I've read the AMD 64 run pretty cool any way)
BUT: My ASUS mobo will not allow fan speeds below 1200rpm (as fixed in the latest BIOS update 1014). It will give an error when booting. I think I can disable this in the BIOS, but I'm not sure if this would be a good idea. If for some reason the cooler would fail I would be looking at a fried processor, right?
The difference in noise between 1250rpm and 1000rpm is not huge, but it's noticable.
What do you think? Should I disable the fan speed check on the mobo?

You should be able to configure shutdown tempature and to disable fan warning. just set the shutdown tempature to something sub 85°c and you're fine :)
But even if the fan fails on the 7700 it should be more than enough cooling to keep the cpu alive for some years. Normal cpu lifetime is considered around 20-25years. Under extreme tempatures and fluctating voltages the avarage life span is around 10-15 years.
Athlon 64's are designed to shut down when they overheat. They also have a heatspreader built in, so that even if you "forget" to put a heatsink on them, they should just shutdown the computer and be allright.
