So, i just finished up gettin all the pieces for my home studio. Now that ive tried recording i decided that i really need a pair of monitors. I have a stero system thats really nice and i was wondering if i could use that. I might be totally wrong my thinking this would work, but in professional recording studios how do they hook monitors up to their computers.

Im trying to connec them to a G5 Mac with OSX thanks.

With most project studios, you'd go out of your computer via an audio interface (with its digital-to-analog or D/A converters) and into studio monitors. And your audio interface is linked to your computer either via USB, firewire or PCI card (depends on the type on audio interface you have).

For improved monitoring, some project studio owners invest in dedicated D/A converters which provide higher performance than many audio interfaces have.

how do you hook up your mixer to the computer? is it a usb mixer? i figured you just had it hooked up to your audiocard, but if its usb, plug the speakers into the outputs on the mixer.

the audiocard is in the back of the computer. if its the same one that came with the computer (im guessing it is if you dunno where it is) than it will most likely have 4 1/8" jacks. one for a microphone, line in, speaker out, and something else i can't remember. if you have computer speakers hooked up now, they are most likely hooked up to it.
