Hello! I am a new member to this community and a newbie  in the recording arts and music production.

I have a home studio and I record and produce my metal band for our first album. Apart from other equipment I own a Yamaha 01v96 version 2 digital console and the burning question is this: Are the mic preamps in it good enough for recording guitars, vox and keyboards or will I need outboard preamps-preferrably tube- for good sounding quality? I'm leaning towards the latter actually but the research I've done throughout these past weeks has confused me even more:( . Also I haven't found any single comment on this mixer and specifically its preamps...

To be more accurate, I plan to record guitars via an sm57 and one or two condenser mics (Neumann TLM 103 and one more, probably a rode) in distance in an isolated booth, vox via the tlm and keyz and the budget is up to 750-800 Euros... Any advice would be very helpful!

Thanx! :)

Wellcome, bluestaff.

Though I own a 01v96 myself I haven't had the chance to really compare against outboard pres. I guess if you're picky you might want to use an outboard preamp on vocals or even the kickdrum. Other than that I think the preamps on a 01v96 are quite OK. I'd look into a pre for vocals.

If the keyz have an s/pdif output you might want to use that instead of the TRS inputs on ch 13 14 15 16. In any other situation I'd place them right next to the console and just use quality cables into any TRS input, no DIs at such short distance.

Good luck on your project.

hi

The 01v96 is a pretty decent product for all it does concerning such a low price tag.

Not promoting myself on here, but just to say that I earned Natura 2005 best Classical album utilizing just an Yamaha 01V96 and half a dozen mid priced microphones.

Buy an additional MY16AT so you can record more than 8 tracks to your favorite daw.

I would just stay away from the TLM 103. I had the chance to test it for a few days here and decided the TLM 193 was a much better mic, and not much more expensive.

hi

Stillus, I have both the 02R V2 48k and the new 01V96. In my opinion the mic pres are cleaner on the new 01V96 and for your happiness, the 02R96 has slightly better mic pres than those of the 01V96.

I have read that the 02R96 has slightly inferior mic pres to those found in their flagship model, the fancier DM2000.
