ok i m Micing a 4x12 cab with a sm57 Micing the center of the cone, and read that a u87 at the edge of the cone is quiet good for taking low end as a second mic, but there is my question how far from the cab do i put the u87, in which direction, what type of capture do i choose ? ( cardio, omni...), cuz i ve put it at the same distance as the sm57 ( like 3 inchs from the grill ) and the capsule is saturating and the sound is reallllllly bad :), the sm57 is perfect but the u87 is non good placed i think.
Please give me some advices thx ;)

Back up the u87 to taste. Don't worry about the phase coherence of the mics right now when you blend them - if you are going to 2 separate tracks (1 for each mic) you can fix it later by sliding one to match the other. Try putting the u87 6 inches or even 9 off the grill, on axis with the edge of the cone. Beware though, listen to the u87 soloed and if there is phase coming on the way in without that second mic there is no way to fix that. Move the u87 around while having it soloed until you get the desired sound you want. Then leave it there and record both mics. Move the u87 forward in time to meet up with the sm57 mic and you should be there.

tone?

what sort of tone are you looking for?? I had a session a few months back and used the EXACT SAME setup as you: 57 and U87...

i was looking for a heavy, crunch tone... I was micing a Marshall 4X12 (with an all tube head). the biggest thing i found to work was this:

TAKE OFF THE BACK PLATE TO THE CAB. I did that and everything changed... there was no more mud, just pure tone... the back wall gives you the late bass womps in your signal. I took that off and miced the top 2 speakers...

57 was pointed right at the cone on a 45degree angle and as close as i could get it to the grill without touching.
the U87 was pointed right at the cone about 4 to 6 inches away from it... strait on.

if you want to listen to tones... you can check out the band i was recording:

you can download some songs... i also posted full production notes on there from the session.

ok it may be the dumbiest question ever
when i solo the u87 to hear if phase is coming...well how can i hear the phase prob...if its soloed...ok ok dumb question...but i need to know that if i want to be aware of that phaaaase ;)

Btw i put the u87 like 2feet away and still have nasty clipping from the capsule... ill definitly see for a line attenuator.
