there is this issue that has been bothering me for a while... I'm soon going to consider a Mixer/soundcard combo (or something like the FW1884)

I have alwaz had the problem of getting enough levels using 58's, and other dynamics (on voice) into the DAW. Be it on the Mackies or on the Tascams. With the Tascams it seems especially bad, even with the Behringer B2 pro, which is a condenser. the Behringer UB seems a lot easier to work with.

anything i need to know ?

One can get a good level using the DM24 by twewaking the fag end of the trim pot very carefully (where there is a sudden boost of level) ... but then a slightly louder pasage and the DM24 pre's clip...

Sounds like you may be running one-legged. Silly question but have you checked your cables?

Are you running balanced or unbalanced, and if balanced, pin 2 or 3 hot?

It's possible your gear is a different "hot pin" to your mic, in which case pins 2 and 3 should be reversed at one end of your cable.

i Have Dm24 and there is an issue with all 16 preamp.Tascam offer replacement for 400$.But if you need more gain without going in "warm zone" you can use one cable 1/4-1/4 and put from insert of channel wherei s your mic into line in of the next channel,and if you use direct outs in your DAW you should consider that next chanel as main.
Or you can always get extragain with software compresors or similar.

I would not double channel a mic pre for more gain unless it was with a Sebatron VMP (which is designed to do this). You will only add unwanted noise.

The DM24 has a problem in that you have to crank up the pres to get a good level from some mics like the 57 ... that's ok but the last bit of travel on the attenuator pot is very touchy. Just a little movement can make a large difference and it can be difficult at best to fine tune the inputs ... cheap pres, what to do??? Get the $400 fix .. it's not right, but if you are going to keep the mixer it needs to work correctly. What you paid for the mixer is really pretty negligible when you consider the price vs. the features .. bite the bullet and get the pain behind you .. Once you have a mixer that works correctly your life will be much simpler.
