I like the suggestion. It is enough of a subject to have its own forum.

It would be a good place to have stickies about the most common mics used and their appliance. All forum members can suggest additions to that list. That way we can support the most obvious questions about mics. I have seen a couple of listings from people like Davedog but I somehow lost that post. It would have been worthy as one of the first stickies.

There are an awful lot of questions about mics. And an awful lot of mics (and counting).
True, there are so many variables involved in mics (aside from the mics) like source, room, placement, signal chain, and so on.
I still think a lot of beginner questions could be directed to something like this - and more advanced members could benefit from things like shootouts and on the job performance.
Example:
As a beginner, I was looking for some general direction. Had I found this forum in time, I would have not bought some cheap condensers ;)
Now I'm looking more for details - color? clarity? source? Sort of a YMMV type thing.

How expansive would this be? There's enough sound-minded individuals running around it here to make it work, so long as the subject matter doesn't get too spread.

Wonner if you might be able to get some manufacturer reps or some distributor's (at least) to be willing to contribute their doc's, such as frequency charts, manuals, etc?

I kinda' agree with the J-man that maybe as a subforum of Pro Audio Gear... which would potentially make sense for a pre-amp sub forum???

I'd volunteer if I was more of a microphone whore. I've got the good stuff from 30 to 50 years ago along with plenty of modern workhorses. The only real interest I have in Chinese condenser microphones are to get some of their capsules and stick them into nonfunctioning old Time classic nonfunctional microphones such as the original Shure 55 that is much wider in appearance than its modern-day lowfat/low-cholesterol brethren. In fact any old microphone that can't cut the mustard anymore, if it looks good, stick a Chinese capsule in it. It will look way cool & may actually sound way better if you find the way to make it all work. It ain't hard. Not that I'm not interested in reviewing other microphones. I getting known quantity from what I used already. If I needed more? I'd probably buy more of the same? I love microphone technologies and the different results one can achieve as they are our largest palette of coloration to our recordings. Nothing impacts a recording more than a microphone. They go well beyond the differences in preamps. So if you have a microphone forum? You'll need to couple that with a preamps forum since the two are so closely integrated. A SM57 will sound like a dream microphone costing many hundreds more when plugged into a quality preamps. On the other hand, plugging it into a five dollar preamp will not yield the same quality tone that, that microphone is capable of. So you really just can't isolate a piece of gear as it would have no real bearing on its sound or use. Sort of like showing off your luxury sports car without any gasoline in the tank much less an ignition system. That's like trying to remove a baby's head just to admire its body. Not a good idea. Especially for the baby who probably wasn't thinking about that?

Let's start making microphones out of real baby bottles! Then it would be OK if your performance & sound, sucks.
