are there any better forums or anywhere on the net for good information on starting off? i just have a lot of questions and i rarely get any replies, i'm not sure how else to go about learning all this stuff, books? any advice?

Google DAW or home recording will get you a lot of hits.

If you have equipment list what you have Pc included. What you are trying to record helps ie vocals, guitar, bass, drum,... What are you giong for demos, songwriting tool, record the band, make cd's...
If you are starting from scratch then you need to have computer which you might already have. If you have a p3 or p4, 512, 1gb, Win 2000 or higher you should get pretty good results. If you have an apple OS9 or X mac should be fine. You also need an audio recording interface. I would also get a decent pair of headphones to monitor what you are recording. Many of the interfaces come with all you need to start recording. After that you can add stuff as you need it.

Here's my take - folks help those who help themselves - IMHO, you come across as asking to be spoon fed information. Personally, I'm turned off by threads where folks are asking questions that are so fundamentally basic that any 10 second search would turn up the information. I won't waste a couple minutes of my time to write up information that is already ridiculously easy to find.
Also, for the basic questions, one answer is enough. If someone has written a good reply, why should I write another saying the same thing. If you don't get a lot of replies, it could well be that the first reply was the right answer.

Read up on the basics, come back here and ask some questions that show you've done your homework already.
As far as help, I don't think you can do better than recording.org. At many forums you'll get your ass chewed for asking simple questions. There are a lot of patient, knowledgeable tutors around here.

BTW, you've asked only a few (2-3) questions, so that isn't much of a sample to make this sort of judgment from.
