I am having trouble finding any information on this. The last time I tracked a band the engineer set up a 57 on the Hi Hat. Taped to the side of the 57 was a 451. The two mic were then bused to one track. I had never seen this technique before but it sounded amazing.

My question is this. How do you figure out the positioning of the 57 to the 451? Do you just try to match up where the capsules are? There must be some trick or guidelines to doing this properly.

Thanks,

Jamie

Wow, two mics on a hat! I've seen this done when micing a snare drum. I'm usually trying to eliminate mics for the hat not adding because for most things I'm getting more than enough hat in the overheads.

Anyway, you simply line up the front of the two capsules, the 57 and 451. When I do this on a snare I usually end up using a 20db pad on the 451, you would probably need a pad for the hat as well.
