Hello guys, I'm a bit new to all this…please help me to make the right choice. I worked with a PC all my life but right now thinking move to Mac... going to buy a new comp (laptop) and pretty much built a home studio based on a laptop.
Just imagine you need/want to build your HOME studio from the very beginning what would you buy? limits are : it has to be laptop, any soft, hard with Firewire.
I know my questions are too general ( and stupid :), but would like to hear your short opinion anyway.

So question #1: to go for apple laptop or stay with PC?

as I see most of pro people work with Mac, but I found a very interesting website and they make only PC laptops for musicians please check it out and tell me what do you think:

question #2: I worked with Samplitude and love it, now if I'll move to Mac, I'll have to work with Pro Tools. I know it's industrial standard na d so on, but...Is it really better then anything right now on the market?

and finally (I know you'll love it:) Cubase or Cakewalk?:)

There is really no advantage running PTLE on Mac. If you were going to a TDM system the answer would be different.

Actually a better choice would be Digital Performer, or Logic on a Mac.

I'm currently doing sessions of 32-48 stereo tracks, on a Powerbook, using Logic.

I suggest you get a hands on tour of the DAW apps, I own both platforms but the software I prefer is Mac-only.

well i use PT digi 002r on a pc and it runs smoothly. The only thing is that youll need to look at the compatability page on the PT website and set up your computer to run protools.

Also once you save to protools on a pc you can use the save disk on a mac, so it wouldnt matter if your using a pc and the guy mastering or mixing is using a mac. Thats its beauty.

The Mac vs Windows war is a religious one, I cannot help you there.. although it's certainly true that the vast majority of PRO audio happens on Macs.

(I had the awe inspiring sight of touring the Skywalker Ranch studios a few months ago and you have to see their central machine room with what must have been 100 Macintoshes in racks)

But I feel more strongly that ProTools LE (while it's not in a league with the HD high end systems) is still at least as good as Logic and DP but with the added benefit that it IS the pro 'standard' more or less.

You may eventually find that that compatibility is helpful to you.

On the other hand, ProTools, while it is storng as a recording tool, is NOT as strong as a sequencer.
If that sort of midi recording is the bread and butter of your work, then indeed Performer might be the way to go.
Lots of people do the sequencing in Performer but then record into ProTools as well.

I'd probably, ultimately, suggest a 002 with ProTOols LE on a Mac.
But that's me.

I'm using Cubase, Samplitude AND Pro Tools on my PC. Well, honestly depening on if you are working more audio recording or wave editing. I prefer Cubase for Audio / MIDI projects. Samplitude for multitrack recording and Pro Tools just to have as a industry standard (so that people can give me PT sessions to work with)
