Let's say you have 4 or 5 pieces of outboard gear that utilize S/PDIF and you would like to bring these units into your signal chain to a Pro Tools Digi001 or any other front-end that has only one input/output for S/PDIF? (and I'm talking RCA connections)
I've been fairly diligent in my search for something akin to a S/PDIF patchbay, but alas, have found nothing even remotely useful.
Thoughts? Should I be thinking differently for a solution?

Obviously not the best solution, but Roland makes an economical SPDIF mixer that re-locks (via SRC, I guess) four SPDIF ins to a common clock of your choice (Internal, External BNC, USB to/from PC, or SPDIF in #1). Even has a 2 channel USB I/O. I think it is called the D-1000... Yup :)

It's a cheap option, but a router/patch bay would be superior unless you really have a need to combine the 4 un-locked SPDIF inputs to a stereo pair for some reason....

I've already posted my thoughts on the problem of clock resolution in simple systems.
I still feel that at the level of the 001 ... analog transfers are fine.
but
if you do use SPDF as an input then the 001 should be slaved to that input and only that input for that take or transfer.
Be very concious of the master / slave and the sample rate
it will save much grief in the future.
A simple patch panel ... or crash switch to handle the multiple sources could get you by.
