Valve verses Tube .

At the risk of getting slammed I was wondering what the sound difference is between a Valve mic preamp and a tube mic preamp. I use an AKG solid tube and I've been looking at the Avalon 737 or the Summit Audio mpc 100a. Then I came across some vocal tracks I liked and when I asked about the chain he said he used a Bog standard Neumann U87 into a Tl Audio valve EQ (with the eq off) into a Summit tl-100. Thus why I'm asking valve verses tube.
