you need a good mic and an interface for your computer. you should be able to squeeze by at 300 dollars for some decent gear. id look into ebay if you aren't too concerned with buying used, you'll get the stuff cheap. i don't know enough about all the many brands to be able to make a useful recommendation, but you can go on ebay, type in "audio interface" and read up on different models. ive used some of the m-audio interfaces and they work fine for beginners... hope that helps somewhat

I went to guitar center yeasterday and the guy tried to show me
--MAudio MobilePre 2x2 16-Bit 48kHz USB Interface with Microphone Preamp
--MAudio Audiophile USB Audio and MIDI Interface

for about 150

The latest reply prior to this told me about the m-audio audio buddy.. i am going to check it out.

but.. is the audio buddy sound good/bad compared to audiophile, audiosport duo or mobile pre??
I dont know. I hope somone here has an answer :)

on samedaymusic.com the review for audiophile is horrible.

startup gear

I second (third... fourth...) the M-Audio Audiophile recommendation -- I've tried a bunch of interfaces, and for my "simple" (2-channel) setup, I've come back to the AP2496.

Assuming you're on a desktop PC (not a laptop), you'll get better performance and fewer tech headaches from the PCI card (as opposed to USB). You should be able to pick one up on ebay for around $100.

If you're on a budget, the ART tube MP studio V3 preamp is a decent starter. Haven't priced them recently, but they were $119 new a couple of years back, and they're all over ebay, so should be sub-$100.

I agree with previous posters -- a Shure SM-57 is a good all-around mic to get you started.

With $300, you should be able to pick all three of these up and have some scratch left for beer.

Yes, M-Audio is good and reliable. I have a FireWire 410 card, and I feared that I'd run into a shitload of problems with driver conflicts and clipping sound, if any at all. I didn't. Just shoved the installation CD into the D: drive, ran the installer, plugged the card into the machine, and voila, worked without any trouble on both my desktop and laptop computers.

Audiophile is good enough for most home studio applications, and it's definitely a good investment.

As mentioned several times, I would try out the Studio Projects' B1. It's a very cheap microphone, yet it has gotten a ton of good reviews, and many people are very pleased with it.

mic set up

just got my mic set up this year

Tascam us 122 interface $200
Shure sm57 microphone $90
mic stand from (on stage) $20 purchased from musicians friend.com)
nady pop stopper $22

I love it

I have a mogami mic cable which was about $49 though, i dont know how a cheaper mic cable would sound with it, but, this set up sounds good!
