Hey RO'ers, I need some help with a dilemma I am having. I have a track recorded and mixed down which plays very well on my monitoring speakers, but when I play the same track in a car stereo the sound of the bass drums doesn't hit as well as they do in the studio. Is there any way to compare the way tracks will sound on different speakers? Should I hook up a different set of speakers and continue to mix my tracks to get a good sound out of those monitors? What can I do to get the best possible overall sound from my tracks when they are played on multiple types of systems (i.e, walkmans, car stereos, house stereos, computers). Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks.

Be aware that hi-fi speakers and near-field monitors have very different designs and applications.
Monitors are designed to tell you the truth, hi-fi speakers are designed to work in a wide variety of envionments, and can add more bass and/or hi frequencies.
The focal point of a hi-fi speaker usually occurs 10-15 feet from the front of the grille cloth. You would need a LARGE room to hear the true stereo field because you would have to be positioned beyond the focal point.
With near field monitors the focal point appears at the grillecloth, and the stereo image appears in front of you.
The best thing to do would be invest in some monitors, otherwise you will not be able to detect problematic frequencies.
