I have the 002 Rack in my "c" suite and it makes money all day long.
I do have RME converters that I use before the 002's inputs but the stock converters will most likely suffice for your use. Are they great sounding A/D's "no" are they really shitty sounding "no" would I invest in a better converter later "yes".

The 002 R does have a power supply problem that caused me a "small" headache. Digi sent me a free one over-night and it took 5 minutes to install. The unit was way out of warranty but they didn't ask any questions.

I like the 002, but I'm sure some people will poo-poo on it quickly.

if you're starting up i think digi ain't the tool for you!
i'd go for something like the motu 828 mkII
it's firewire so you can use with a laptop! has 20 inputs and 22 outputs, 2 pres and doesn't cost that much... you can save the money for a cool mic!
for you i'd recommend
motu 828 mkII
shure sm57 mic
maybe a condenser like many out there
and some monitors! you'll be ready to go!

Thank you for the help. Sounds like you've had success w/ the 002r. Also sounds like you use a few things to make it work. Do you think the factory bundle is worth the money or do you even use it?

I'm looking into the MOTU 828 mkII. Looking at there web site and I dont see any software? Does anyone else have a opinion about the MOTU? The cost is cheaper than the 002. I'm wondering about the software.

actually i've just bought an 828 mkII but i haven't recieved it so i don't know if it comes with digital performer! Xavier you know???
as for the software i recommend you to look at adobe audition (former cool edit pro)
it's amazing and it's really easy to work with!
also check the pro-tools topics (why i hate pro-tools and so on on the other forums)
you may realize that what suits you best ain't pro-tools... (i'm not bashing it! just telling what i think...)

as for other things tell us about your budget and goals and what you're planing to spend!

also if you have the money look at rme fireface 800

If you have a Mac, consider Logic. It'll work with MOTU, digi... whatever. You'll get tons of plugins bundled with it. Way more than Pro Tools. Not that there is anything wrong with Digi 002. I have worked on all the Digidesign stuff and I love it. You just get a lot more for your money the other way.

Logic is great for MIDI but not that good for audio. It just doesn't seem to me that you have as many options for audio with Logic that you have with Pro Tools. I have a digi 001 (gotta upgrade...soon!) and it's worked awesome for the last 3 years or so.

I've never tried the MOTU so I can't compare. I think a friend of mine had a MOTU interface a few years ago that he used with Digital Performer, and he seemed to like it.

I don't think that was much help for you, but I like the Digi stuff, it works well, and it's some good quality stuff for the most part. Get a good mic pre and a good mic and you'll be set!

chris i've never tried them both! i've just ordered a 828 mkII but i've been around a few of them and heard recordings of people with them!
the impression i have is that they are basically the same type, expect the motu has better features with adat, channels and so on... never compared conversion one on one but i'd say they're on the same league... the pres nothing special, but that's normal...
the only reason i recommend the motu instead of the digi is because it has more possibilities than digi! it works with different software's, it's portable which is great, costs 2/3's of the 002 and isn't from a microsoft look alike company...

i really think that pro-tools hd may be the real thing but the pt le no way! people go to le cause of the pt before it... :?
the one i'd reccomend (never heard but the other products are amazing and i've been told that's an amazing product) is the rme fireface 800! that must be great!!! so i'd narrow to:
1- rme fireface 800
2- motu 828 mkII or 896hd
3- digi 002

Ive just joined the forum and i must say that this post has been a great help to me! I am currently recording with an ex member of dire straits and he is running the pt hd system. I have been very impressed with the results and i am looking into buying 002 with the control surface. Thanks for the advice on the motu unit. I have used this before and have found it very efficient. I was trained at college with logic and i must admit that i found it superior for midi sequencing but i was amazed with the production of audio using pt instead of logic!

The new version (7 Pro) seems to have caught up and even surpassed PT in the editing department. I wish I knew for sure, as I am pretty serious about starting to use it instead of Pro Tools.

The 828mkII comes with AudioDesk, which is basically an older version of Digital Performer with no MIDI capabilities. By the time you add software to it, you're in the same ballpark as the 002R cost-wise.
