Hi all!
I record at home during my free time, but since my fellow house-dwellers sleep at night, I'm restricted to recording direct to my PC/4-track/whatever I happen to be using at the time.
My guitar parts just don't have that "something" that most commercial recordings do. I know most people have the luxury of Micing up an amp and tearing away.
I'd like to get that "amp sound" without creating any sound outside of what I hear in my headphones. :)
I really like the sounds Rob Cavallo gets on his recordings, if that gives some kind of idea of what I'm shooting for.
Any suggestions or pointers? Or is it all trickery during the mix process? I've got about $200 to work with should I need a simple piece of gear.

For direct recording they are hard to beat, and have a good selection of products that cater to different budgets.
Another one is the Carvin X4 Quad Preamp. It is out of production, but you can still find them on Ebay. The clean sounds from this box will kick your ass. The distortion is very unique, an can get fuzzier than anything you can imagine(nine 12AX7's cascaded.. that's 18 stages!).

I agree very much with this. I just finished an album with my band and all the guitars were done with Sansamp and they really sound great. I've used the Line 6 POD a few times but I think the Sansamp has a much better, more realistic sound. I've also tried Ozone's Trash. It's cool but still no real substitute. I haven't heard any amp sim plugins that sounded inspiring.

Certainly not the overall best option, but one of the highest things you can shoot for with 200 and no amping.
