A customer requested I setup their DAW system based on the above article. However when I do, the PCI based cards do not work. They show up and the drivers are loaded by XP but they have an exclamation mark and the message "This device cannot start" - Code 10. Switching the cards around makes no difference. I reinstalled XP the standard way and all the items were recognized and work without a hitch.

The mainboard is a Asus A7M266 with dual MP1800 CPU's, Matrox G450 32MB Dualhead video, Dakota soundcard, USB 2.0 PCI card, 3Com 10/100 network card, 1GB of memory, dual 80GB harddrives.

At this point XP has been installed and the mainboard AGP and IDE drivers. No Windows updates as yet have been installed.

Anyone with any ideas on this? Must have something to do with setting XP up as a "standard pc".

Btw - the article is pretty in depth but an area on BIOS settings and which XP updates to install would be useful.

Hmm...that's a first on the tweaks causing this in any way. Many sucessful tweaks have been done without any problems before. In fact over twenty done by myself the last two months or so.
We've seen this with the Motu card on a P4 system before and usually it happens on non Intel based machines!! You should know this Fats!!! lol
Anyhue, I'm setting up a Dual AMD MP system at owrk right now...
Asus A7M266-D, two MP 2200 CPU's, RME 9652, FireWire Card, Adaptec U160 SCSI card and a Matrox G550 with no problems in any way.
With dual systems you MUST install it as a MPS Multiprocessor!!! Plain and simple!!!
Anyhue, is that the way you installed it? Did you install the system with just the video card then add in each other card? Install all hardware first THAN do the tweaks!!!

Thanks for the quick reply! I didn't do anything different than the article stated. Where would I make the selection for a "MPS Multiprocessor"? Is there a choice when you press F5 at the start of the XP install for this?

In both installs all the PCI cards were installed along with the video card. Removing the drivers and installing the cards in other slots didn't make any difference.

Hopefully the problem has something to do with setting it up as a MPS multiprocessor.

Also, as to windows updates, do you install all the critical updates (with most having to do with internet security)? Do you think it would make any difference on performance to install SP 1 and all updates?

Since you're working on a similiar system, any BIOS tweak suggestions?

Yes, my tweak guide should be updated do reflect Dual systems but generally I do only single CPU systems, mostly P4 based.
Yes, when it says pres F6 press F5 to select the list and you will see MPS multiprocessor as a choice.
You must reinstall it as that as switching over to one mode over the other is NOT recommended!!
In fact as I was typing my first response to you I realized I installed this machine as ACPI Single Processor!! DOH!! Doing a reinstall of it right now myself! lol
Anyhue, no updates if this does NOT touch the internet...it will only mess things up from what I have seen! No need for them HO
I recommend installing with no other PCI cards other than the video card.
BIOS tweaks...Set Processor detection to AUTO..Set FSB to 133. Disable Serial Ports, Change Parellel port to EPP, Plug and Play OS to NO, Disable Floppy Seek on Boot Up, Disable Onboard Audio...that's about it!!

Seems I was a bit premature in thinking it was resolved, one PCI card went on fine but the next ones gave the exclamation. Last time one card also went on fine (but as it was the USB 2.0 card from Asus didn't think much about it). Anyways, turns out upgrading the BIOS from version 1006 (5/02) to 1008 (9/02) resolved the problem. However as this had multi-CPU's it was good I contacted you for the revised info on setting up XP for MPS rather than standard. Thanks again...
