hey all, as i've been trying to solve the problem of occasional popping and clicking (the bane of my existence), i've looked into everything under the sun except for the way my hard drive had been set up by gateway. apparently, i've got an IDE PCI adapter that connects the hard drive to the motherboard via the PCI bus. This makes me kinda nervous, since, with my sensitive pro-audio card on the PCI bus as well, i imagine that the hard drive adapter might be causing some problems. I was wondering, first off, if i even know what i'm talking about, and secondly, exactly how to bypass the card if it is causing problems. I already tried just unistalling the adapter and plugging the hard drive directly onto the motherboard, but my computer wouldn't recognize the hard drive. any help would be great.

Your onboard IDE controller is probably disabled. Go into your bios and enable it. When you reboot Windows should say new hardware found. Go into control panel/system/device manager and verify you have 2 different IDE controllers. You can then disable the PCI IDE controller, (if you like) remove the card and move your HDD cable to the Mobo. This may or may not solve your audio problem but it's worth a shot. Good Luck

hey thanks guys, here's some more info about my computer, and yeah, it's getting ancient, but it gets the job done with the old cubase VST32:
500MHz pentium III, 256MB RAM, stock gateway motherboard (some no-name brand), IBM deskstar drive, echo MIA soundcard, Promise Ultra66 PCI controller card, running with windows 98 on its own partition specifically for recording. I've got the latest BIOS download, maybe i'm just not enabling the onboard controller correctly? Thanks again in advance for any more advice (aside from the obvious "get a new computer"...i'm working on that hehe)

Well, with no information on the hard disk, motherboard, operating system, sound card, or ... there isn't much to go on.
I also have a PCI controller card in my DAW and a PCI-based sound card - I have found that it is not a good idea to record to a disk on the PCI controller - but I don't have any trouble if I record to a disk on the motherboard controller.
You'll need to give us some specifics on your hardware before we can do much to help you out. Sounds like you must have a pretty old motherboard - or perhaps you're overdue for a BIOS update.
