I am new to the recording world, and have purchased some equipment that I either haven't figured out yet, or isn't working well together.

Firewire Solo
M-Audio Nova condensor Mic...
So I've been messing around with equipment, and I just can't get the vocals up loud enough. I've turned the volume all the way up on all of the equip...to no avail. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or if my mic or the firewire solo sucks. I have a 10 day window to return the equipment if I don't like it...
Can anyone make any suggestions? I'd rather return the equipment and invest a bit more $ if I'm not going to get a decent sound out of it.

The store should not have sold you the Nova mic and the Firewire
The store should not have sold you the Nova mic and the Firewire Solo saying they would work well together. The Nova is a relatively low ouput mic, and the Solo just doesn't have enough gain (only 40dB) to deal with it for normal studio recordings. I think that even higher output LDC mics would be pushed to get a high enough level through the Solo interface.
You're a bit stuck if you want to stay with Firewire in that price range. You could consider returning the Solo and going for something like an Alesis Multimix 8 Firewire mixer. It's got the gain to cope with the Nova, but it's not the same sort of animal as a Firewire sound card. There are several reasonable Firewire interfaces in the next higher price bracket, but I don't know how much you would want to spend.
With USB interfaces, there's more choice at the low end of the market. However, Firewire is the way to go if you can get the right combination of microphone and interface.
