So I wanna get headphones to monitor my recording.

I want it to be under $50.00

I know it'll be hard to find really food headphones for that low of a price; but I just want decent ones.

Since there aren't really any good cans in this price range, I've gone cheaper and have a few pairs of Senn HD202s around. They are close to $20 a pair, closed back, and (if you like the Senn style) they sound about as good as anything in the budget price range. Everything in this range is going to be colored, so I'd pick a color you like and buy cheap. Save your pennies for a genuinely good set of cans.

I guess its down to the Audio-Technica ATH-M20 and the Senn HD202

I've been looking at these Sony MDR-V700DJ V700 DJ headphones on ebay by various sellers in China for around $30.00 - $40.00

I'm guessing these are fake...

Compared to a few other recommended cans in that range (Senn HD-280, Sony MDR-7506), I prefer these. They're not perfect, but I trust them much more than any other pair I own.

I haven't had a lot of experience using headphones since I last worked in Radio in 1974, but I quite like the Sennheiser HD 477 headphones I found on sale at Sears for $20 a couple of years ago.

They pale in comparison to the HD 414 headphones I still have from 1973 (replacement ear pads from Sennheiser added about 10 years ago), but they get the job done.

I bought a bunch of Sennheiser HD212Pro's a few years back. I think they were under $50....Nice lightweight and they really dont sound half bad. Not something you want to mix on....I still use my MDR 7506's and even my really old MDR V6's or even the Koss 'clampers'... ( I know you guys dont like Sony's that much). I HAD an old old set of Fostex phones. These had suspension and great ear pads wonderfully tight lows and even highs....They were so much better than you'd think.....stolen.....AND IF YOU"RE OUT THERE READING THIS I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!! If I'm ever going to buy great phones they're gonna be Grados. End of story.

Just never really trusted my 7506s, Dave.

I use my cans as a reality check against my two monitors (Alesis MK1s and MAudio BX5As). I have low-end issues in my room (that's been well documented here) and want something really flat.
The Alesis' do well on the mids, the highs are a little hyped on the M-Audio's (though they do reveal harshness better than the Alesis'), and I have a sub to check the bottom.

I just think my 240s do a better job of "telling it like it is" than my 7506s or 280s. Or my monitors. I have used them since my days of doing stereo mic recordings on my Yamaha AW16G in a club or bar, so that's probably why I trust them more.

That said, there are thousands of headphones out there, and none are right for everybody. I'll have to look into the HD212s when I need a couple of extra cans for the musicians.

Upanda - if you can't afford $200-$300 cans, check out the Sennheiser's Dave mentioned. Chances are you'll get some years of good use out of them if you treat them nicely.

Well I'm down to 5 choices.

I understand all of these headphones aren't top quality..or even near it, but for now I think these will do.

1. Audio-Technica ATH M20
2. Koss UR20 Studio Stereophones
3. Sennheiser HD 202
4. Sony MDR XD200
5. Sennheiser HD 201

They're all around 20-40 bucks

Which one do you guys think I should chooes?

Guitarfreak wrote: Sennheiser HD 201 if you're on a super tight budget and don't really care about quality, which I think is your case. But Personally from that list I would pick the ATH-M20. Keep in mind that my choice is limited to that list.

out of the ones i listed price isn't really a big factor (since they're all cheap)

I just want to know which one has the best quality in sound. I understand all of these headphones arent very good, but I was wondering which of the ones on the list is good.

So you think the ATH-M20 is superior in quality out of the 5?

TheJackAttack wrote: Superior doesn't enter the list for any of them. Usable is the qualifying adjective.

Okay please read what i wrote one more time

Yes, I understand that none of these headphones are good in your eyes. I can't repeat that enough...or at least for you to understand, apparently.

I'm asking which one out of the five is the best.

BobRogers wrote: Because the sound of all of them is going to be suboptimal, put more emphasis on comfort. Comfort is a big issue on long sessions so if you can't afford great sound, you might as go with what feels good.

Because I could not find any of these headphones at stores near me it's kinda hard for me to determine which ones are comfortable.

Do you have any idea?

Guitarfreak Sun, 06/21/2009 - 19:18

I agree, it's not a big purchase, you are just purchasing them so you can have something to wear while monitoring right? Or is it so you can make mixes with pumping bass, trashcan-sounding snare and no HF? None of them are going to give you high quality, nothing at this price range will. So buy the first ones that catch your eye and either be happy with them or raise your budget and get something you might actually get results with. Hey at least you'll be set for the road.

Buying cheap just means you'll have to spend more money later.

This reminds me of an old story (and I mean no offense by this, seriously):

Buriden's Ass: It refers to a paradoxical situation wherein an ass (donkey), placed exactly in the middle between two stacks of hay of equal size and quality, will starve to death since it cannot make any rational decision to start eating one rather than the other.

When you are confronted with a choice between two or more things that are identical, like 5 sets of headphones that suck equally, you can get paralyzed with indecision. The solution: just pick one or you will starve to death. So to speak.

Davedog Sun, 06/21/2009 - 22:21

Sorry, but a lot of folks on here have graduated from the cheap headphone selections. No one means you any harm by telling you these selctions arent going to sound all that good. And since you cant try them out, then you will have to make a decision based on a blurb in the catalog. Sorry....perhaps there will be some reviews somewhere.

Everybody understands what you're saying. No need to get snappy about it

Of course, if you had simply said, I have a small budget, I need some phones, I cant try them out and have to buy online......maybe there would have been less emotional content.

Heres the thing. They are all going to be very similar. You're going to replace them one day when you have a better budget. Buy what looks right in the ads.
