Im an 18 year old who is trying to get an entry level setup while still holding great quality for my projects at a very cost efficient setup.
Im looking into a 15' 1.5 Ghz 1GB Ram PowerBook G4 running the latest updated version of OS X 10.5 Leopard with the M Audio Nova Microphone,Firewire Solo Interface, and am wondering wheather the Audio Buddy -Microphone Preamp would be necessary or not but i included it in my pricing anyhow. all of this is coming to $667 not including tax and shipping fees. with the preamp included is 60$ more. i browsed around online to find the best pricing for the equipment. I also am questioning wheather logic studio, pro tools, or garageband would be suitable for my needs basically I'm looking for great quality vocals mixed into a premade instrumental (beat) or commercially distributed instrumental witch comes on most but not all singles. any suggestions are appreciated but do you guys think this type of setup would work for me? and while I'm working with this for a few years ill be saving up to upgrade to the 17' macbook pro or equivalent for whenever I'm purchasing a new computer I'm trying to STEER THE HELL AWAY from pc's atm because I'm not a fan of messing with configurations in the OS plus windows is starting to annoy me as i cant decide whether or not i want XP or 7 >;[

i specifically sought out the powerbook because i worked on G4'G5 macs well the towers atleast in my 11th grade tv productions class with final cut pro so i figured if a G4 processor can get your basic video editing done why couldnt a g4 powerbook with sufficient ram do the same =D the powerbook has both firewire and firewire 800 ports

You are exactly the right type of consumer Apple and all of its marketing wants, but mind you a few things you may not know:
-A Core2Duo is a more powerful processor than a G4/G5...
-When and if you want to use multiple FW hardware....
-The 800 speed automatically drops to FW 400 speeds...
Pro Tools has strict guidelines and limits what can be used with it...
Personally I wouldn't touch anything M-audio but if you are on a tight budget?
There are better choices for your dollar....
When you do want a professional computer/DAW?
(and you have the budget to do so)
I recommend you check out a properly built DAW/PC instead of a MAC.
You'll only find this out (sans mucho research) when the limitations of that macbook are realised (and trust me, they will be!)

The computer is fine, Mac, PC whatever you like. Garageband is certainly enough to do what it is you are looking to do at this stage (single vocal tracks or even multiple tracks.) You may have to convert your prerecorded "beats" format so they work in garageband but that is no big deal. I would suggest you start off with a SM58 vocal mic rather than an inexpensive condenser mic the cost is pretty much identical. You should probably read this
