ReVibe Room Modeling Reverb TDM Plug-in

A new plugin from Digidesign designed exclusively for the new HD Accel card, ReVibe is intended to give Pro Tools TDM users a room modeling reverb tool that can handle any reverberation task. The 96 kHz-capable ReVibe plugin provides eight entirely new reverb algorithms complementing an extensive collection of over 100 room types/early reflections. Its innovative room-modeling algorithms allow combinations of different room reflections and coloration, and are presented in an easy-to-use preset manager that is embedded within the user interface. Interactive displays derived from Digidesign’s Reverb One are used throughout the ReVibe plugin , making it even easier to visualize and edit reverb characteristics.

A new plug-in from Digidesign designed exclusively for the new HD Accel card

Digidesign is really pissing people off. First they introduce the Accel cards, good. Then they deside to make them about $400 more a card when you buy a system new vs an older HD system, great. Then digi decides to make an upgrade for old HD card users, trade in your 1st HD card for $2500, and all others after that $2000, wow what a bargain. A person who is new to jump on the HD bandwagon pays about $7600 for an HD2 system with accel cards, i'll be paying $10000 for mine. And to top it off Digidesign is the only company that are making Accel exclusive plugins, Everyother comp[any is still making products that support all TDM formats, even the new console EQplug-insAlecio posted which aren't even out yet but there beta testing for accel and most likely already made the TDM vesion.

This kind of thing is always going on at DD. These folks that run that company are based in Redwood City, CA in the SF Bay Area, where a small aprtment can cost $2000 per month. They have no concept of how much money this is. In order to continue in their acustomed life styles, they need to constantly milk their customer base. It seems the attitude is if you can't afford it, then you shouldn't be doing it. I hate Digidesign and I will never buy their products. Apple/Macintosh is a willing partner in this same type of marketing.

I hope someday all their faithful users will wake up and realize what is being done to them every 8 to 16 months (a product cycle for both these companies) and migrate to more affordable computers and software. I don't see what either of these products have to offer other than a higher price tag and a lot of ootie tootie, snob appeal.

Kurt, you are 100% right. We have a misconception here in Brazil that the USA audio pro community just uses Apple/MAC stuff because it is "better" (fancy).
I agree with ethan that one can have an extremely stable systems with a PC, but for PT TDM systems this just does not seem to have reached a very stable path. Just exam the number of people that post at the windows room.
I try to read as many news as possible and post releases and when possible beta test some stuff.
However, I am almost dizzy to see how many new stuff is out there and being exclusively done for HD.

It is ok they need to pay for research, etc etc but hey, one can not stop his job to debug software for free.

I've visted this site for a few months. I've been involved with other sites longer, perhaps a couple of years. Quite franly, Kurt, my opnion of your ability to be neutral, or to review any product objectively, has diminished quickly. This last set of statements by you has lead me to the conclusion that I simply can't trust what you say. Too bad for the site, it's good otherwise.

Why is it Kurt's responsibility to be neutral?

My opinion differs from his, but he is entitled to voice his.

IMO, Digi is right to charge what they do. They have the name. Same for Apple. If your company has the name, then you're stupid not to exploit it.

Dissatisfied users have the freedom of choice to buy your product or not. HD|ACCEL cards are the new thing, and they might not be backwards compatible, but don't the old HD cards still work? When you choose a platform, you choose a set of compatibilities.

Would we rather Digi rest on their laurels for a couple of years?

You're probably right. Kurt apparently has no obligation (or desire) to be neutral. I was wrong. I guess I was lead astray because Kurt wirties reviews of products and is a main moderator here. I naively thought this would equate with a mature, reasoned and balanced view on things.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever read here. The idea that a moderator or a reviewer should be expected to not have an opinion, is ludicrous. Everyone has opinions. All the moderators here and at the other sites have a recording set up of some type. How did they ever choose their recording gear, computers and software, if they had no opinion? Just about every review in all the trade mags end with a paragraph titled "conclusions". A conclusion is an opinion. That is just the dumbest thing I have ever seen posted anywhere. That post should be in the dictionary, next to the word "dumb".

If I write a biased review, please feel free to mention it. But give me some specifics. Don't criticize me with generalities. If I am wrong go ahead and say so. I dare you to find one untruth in any of my reviews! Just because you don’t like the message that I carry isn’t justification to attempt to discredit me or engage in assassinating my character, casting innuendos that I am unable to write a fair review.

I don't see that I need to be opinion-less, to write what my impression of something is. I actually don't think there is anyone who doesn't develop an opinion of anything they come across. Fletcher (who I bet you are a fan of) does reviews all the time and is much respected. But he has very strong opinions too. I don't see anyone expecting him not to be outspoken. I haven’t once heard anyone criticize him for taking an ADAT and a Mackie and impaling it on a javelin and sticking a sign on it that said “Shit on a stick” at a Trade Show. So why do I get all this attention?

I don't feel it's reasonable to expect this of anyone. It sure seems like I come under fire for not living up to others expectations as a reviewer a lot. I have a feeling it has to do with other factors than any real consideration of "fairness". IMO, moderators shouldn't be required to be neutral and reviewers shouldn't either. How could any knowledgeable person be neutral?

Why am I the only person who is expected to live up to this standard? I think it is because I am willing to say so when I feel a company is ripping the public off. Because I am not entrenched in the "good ol' boy" network. Because I am honest about what I hear and see rather than just pushing the same old crap and maintaining the status quo?

I think a lot of this criticism is coming from somewhere else other than the casual readers. I suspect other motives. If this isn’t what is happening, then all I have to say is “what is it to you?”

sdelsolray,
I own/use Digidesign products and I agree with Kurt that the company shakes down its' customers on a regular basis. I don't know if it is because they are stupid or smart, or what their business model is, but I am sick of it and so are a lot of other folks. I am also sick of people taking potshots at mods, especially when they have less than ten posts. Some of the best mods on the rec boards, guys with decades of experience and the willingness to share it, have been hounded off by amateurs. I don't want to see that here.
sdelsolray, you are welcome here if you contribute positively (I note that you didn't offer any support material to defend your position that DD is NOT ripping off the people). I don't care if you disagree with other people's opinions, in fact I practically encourage it, but no cheap crap, please. These days, I doubt you will find many boards or mods with more patience than us. David

Kurt,

You have a right to be upset just like you have a right to voice your opinion. Please don't let this guy stop you from performing the wonderful service you do.

I mean who doesn't realize that a product review is a statement of opinion, accompanying a statement of fact.

C'mon guys, to write something like " That is the stupidest thing I have ever read here. "
is just going to steere us away from the subject.
I try to ignore flamers but when I have to go thru pages of disrespectfull rant, to find info is just frustrating.
BTW, this is not directed at some particular person. I have nothing but respect for you people with the same interest as I.
On topic, I would have to agree with missilanious and Kurt here, although I am a PTLE user myself its only because that was the only program that I knew of and had recorded to before I wentured into this home recording thing.
I hate the fact that they write every program for MAC´s first and then, if they feel like it, write it for PC. I´m willing to bet that for the last year, PTLE has more PC user´s than MAC.
I´ve been following this.
And these updates, are sometimes a joke. They introduced a new wersion of PTLE, the 6.0 Subsecuently they're forum filled up with people sharing the same problem "unable to bounce to disk". The most resent software uppdate, the 6.1 ......well the problem was still the same.
They hang on to track limitations :D .

Alécio Costa Mon, 10/13/2003 - 19:58

the unable to complete bounce to disk was a serious ghost that made me crazy at version 4.3
Fortunately a nice brazilian tech told me about a bug that changed the DAE buffer.
What happens when you try to do the bounce?
are you converting after bounce or during bounce?
disable all your plugs when douing the bounce of your junior mstering. Today I had a session full of RTAs plugs and they were knocking the cpu quite hard, even changing settings of cpu usage, etc etc.

golli Tue, 10/14/2003 - 19:04

I must admit I´ve been tempted to go from 5.3.1 to 6.1, but I've NEVER had any problem with it.
So I'll wait for few months or more to see if they come up with something better.
And of course if I would go to 002r, I'd gett it, with it.
I just feel like this DAW world is still so wet behind the ears :p .
