Hi. This is my first post. I hope you can help me out. I really havent got a clue about digital converters or sound cards. I'm using a Yamaha O1X right now. I have a Soundelux 195 into a Great River pre into a Distressor for vocals.
I really want to sell my Yamaha O1X. It's a pain in the ass and I hardly ever use the faders. Now, I use my O1X's internal sound card. If I sell it, will I need to buy an actual sound card...or a digital converter? Is a 16 channel digital converter the same thing as a sound card? Sorry I must sound really dumb lol.
I want to be able to send my recorded vocals back into my distressor or a different compressor for further hardware compression. Could someone tell me exactly what I need to buy? So as from now, I have no soundcard/digital converter.
P.S, the Apogeestuff might be out of my price range...but it still can be considered.

2 analog in/out - 2 digital in/out(Including AES/EBU or SPdif), which can all be used at once for 4 ch i/o. Clock cables, very fine converters - very fine! ALL XLR, so ALL pro!
The newer LynxTwo or the less "fancy", same otherwise L22, converters are supposed to be even better - and fully capable of 96+ i/o! With L2, L22, you'll have to find your own midi i/o(Lynx says they didn't bother as everyone's idea of "right" for midi was different - and cheap anyway.).
Add an Aurora(8 or 16), whenever you want and you are at the top of the heap, cain't git no better!
Keep in mind that with this setup you may need some way of connecting/controlling headphones/monitors/other input/outputs, etc. Many "black boxes", or very shiny boxes available from 0 to light, price-wise. I just use my little Mackie 1202 mixer, as for me, ultimate quality of these functions is NOT neccessary - though "the best" is needed for the signals themselves and I always get it from Lynx...

If you really hate the Yamaha, then go ahead and get rid of it. You will find that you now need a new sound card and some AD and DA converters though. I've really been digging the Aurora from Lynx and I use the Lynx AES16 too. This isn't a cheap combination, but in the world of AD/DA converters, it certainly ain't bad at all. The Aurora will set you back $2K and the AES 16 another $750. Tack on the cables and you're looking at another $300-$500.
All in all though, you'd get a great set of converters with a bullet proof sound card. And it certainly would allow you to use your outboard effects in post no problem. (I do this all the time with mine - send the software mixer with all the vox on one bus to an output channel and return that channel as a new set of inputs to tap my compressors and effects. It's a tad more time consuming than a plug in, but the results can't be beat!)
Otherwise though, you might want to look at something like the RME fireface. It will do AD/DA and it all works over firewire. It will set you back around $1500 and it sounds pretty good too!
