Gday guys,
Lately I've kind of been thrown into the deep end at work in regards to audio, going from hobby to job overnight. I would love a bit of insight into ideas for portable, lightweight and good sounding powered speakers. I understand that because they are powered, they may be heavy, but I am interested anyways! The speakers need to be able to reproduce speech clearly (in a perfect world the speakers would be transparent, just making the mic'd signal audible yet not really noticeable [like a booming array or anything] ) and must be able to cover an area in front of the 2 speakers that 30 people can hear.
SIlly I know, but I was thinking more along the lines of powered monitors or those small bose type speakers than PA type, mainly for the size and clarity issue. Any opinions? Budget is around 1250 us.thanks a heap!

Thanks mate! Unfortunately it looks like that won't be a goer as we need it by Monday. We were looking at the EV S40 speaker and a Crown D75A power amp, though no one in Aus has one. Anyone got any ideas on a comparable amp to the Crown?

Frankly, by Monday, almost any speakers/amp(PA or otherwise, self-powered or not) would likely be fine, from any local music/stereo store. More frankly? A big "boom box" or someones home stereo could do the job for 30 people, quite nicely. Audiophile quality? Depends on the stereo... but fine, none-the-less. You could likely even rent something from the music store or a local PA company(Or an area wedding DJ? Especially as he won't be busy on a Monday!) for this specific gig and continue to investigate other options, without having to make a quick purchase right now...

Teddy, did you overlook that this was for p.a? If not would you actually use a boom box for p.a.? Regardless of how small the audience is? I wouldn't. BUT that being said, it's my opinion that if you can't speak loud enough for thirty people to hear you there isn't much a p.a. will do for you anyway, especially in the hands of someone who doesn't have a ton of experience.

Check-out Lipinski Speakers... Don't have the address right here, but you should find it easily with a Google search... They are passives, so you can carry the amp seperately AND they come with their own carrying cases, just for your purpose! The newest models are the lightest, both size and cost(Around 1400 per pair US.). If you already have an amp that would work well, you're in business! Said, in reviews I've read, to be of exceptional quality.
