Can someone please tell me, is the Firebox capable of simultaneous recording and playback on its digital in/outs? I have an Edirol FA-101 and found that it can only record OR playback on the digital connections - which makes it hard to use my external mastering gear.

Yes, the Firebox can record the S/PDIF inputs with up to four analog inputs, and concurrent playback on a pair of channels, which could be the S/PDIF pair. Make sure you select the clock source as S/PDIF if you are using the S/PDIF inputs.
What you can achieve in practice depends on the audio software you are using. The Firebox is shipped with Cubase LE.
