So, we are finally getting things all setup...we've got a 24 channel multi-track recorder and are going to run a split snake to live mix and recording/broadcast mix.
What we want though is the ability to use this recording mix setup for both live recording (No need to pump tracks back into the monitors) and studio recording (Need to pump tracks back through monitors).
As it stands we have a 24 channel board that 24 channels will go XLR into. Here is where I am confused...our board has Line In, XLR In, and Inserts. Through messing around, I can take the XLRs in for the recording then take the Inserts out to the HD recorder on a track by track basis. This seems to work fine...not sure if it is supposed to, but I can't do digital on this and this board has no direct outs.
Then, if I want to bring audio in from the recorder to the board so I can pump in tracks for studio type recording, I take TRS outs from the recorder and into the Line In.
On this particular board though, this causes a problem and it won't pump it through if I have an Insert plugged in.
Anyways, so I guess I'm asking...if I want to be able to pump audio from the recorder on a channel by channel basis through my board as well as record to the recorder, what board would you recommend?
At this time, I can sort of get it to work with XLR in for main channels. Then, Inserts out to the recorder, then Line Ins from the recorder for monitor. But I'm not sure this is correct.
The best option would be a digital board that has 24 channels of optical...but this is too much money.

Yeah, the board I currently have is straight analog. We actually use a Yamaha O1V96 for our house system. It's definitely great.
I've been looking around a bit and have noticed the older versions, the O1V are selling for around $500 or so used. Can they still take the 16 channel card?
Also, if I go the O1v route in order to utilize the 32 total channels, I'd need a 16 channel outboard pre-amp, which would take up 16 channels of audio if I wanted to send it to the board from the snake, right? Since the O1v only has the 12 xlr's and 4 TRS ins.
So, in order to get even 24 channels total on the O1v I'd need the 16 board channels then the I'd have to take 8 channels digitally via an outboard pre-amp. So, there would go 8 of my digital ins for monitoring purposes from the recorder, which is an Alesis HD24 by the way.
So confusing to me. =) Any other suggestions or comments on this? Another O1v sounds like a great route to me, but I'm just not sure the best way to set this up so that I can accomplish what I'm trying to accomplish...
1. Spitting channels out from the HD24 for playing/singing with pre recorded tracks
2. Adjusting levels, panning, eq, etc. going to the HD24 while recording

If you are careful about setup and use of the HD24, you can have 24 input channels as a mix of analog and digital (selectable in pairs), and then take the digital outs via lightpipe into your 01V96. Set the HD24 to monitor its inputs. You would be using the HD24's A-D converters, but they are not that bad. This scheme avoids having to re-plug your optical connections when you want to mix down.

Taking channel outs from the insert jacks is standard practice for boards that have no channel direct outs. There have been several recent threads about this on these forums. However, if you plug a jack into an insert, the signal to the main mix for that channel is broken. You need a specially wired TRS jack with the tip connected to the ring so that the signal is sent on to the channel fader as well as being taken out down the cable. Hosa makes an adaptor that does the job: model DOC-106.
I don't know what you mean by "..can't do digital on this..", unless you mean it's an analog board.
If your recorder has optical inputs and outputs (such as a Alesis HD24), it mates very well with the Yamaha digital boards ("0" and "DM" series). The cheapest of these is the 01V96. This will do 24 channels of optical in and out when fitted with the MY16-AT expansion option. This bottom-of-the-range model has only 12 microphone inputs, and they are of moderate quality. You could add 4 more using external analog preamps and a further 2 via S/PDIF before you start impinging on the optical inputs count. However, you begin to realise the benefits of a digital mixer of this sort when you can switch between recording and mixdown (production) setups by simply recalling a stored patch.
