Lately when I turn my amp up to or past the point of speaker distortion the cab begins to smell like it is burning. Not like something left in the oven for too long, but it certainly is a smell that you aren't expecting to come from your cab. It is reminiscent to a doctor's office smell, like that sterile smell mixed with rubber.
Basically, is this normal for such a high volume or can the speakers just not handle it (they are rather poor quality).

You think so? I personally find it hard to believe, but that seems to be the general consensus is that they're either blown or going to blow in the near future. I think of it as just stretching their legs, but I guess it's more like running head on into a crossfire, you're bound to get hit eventually.

If you are getting a smell from the speaker (and if it is distorting as you say) then you are almost certainly overloading it. While it may not fail immediately, repeated overheating will damage the glue, wire enamel and even the coil former. This will undoubtedly lead to premature speaker failure at any time. It will either go open circuit, start distorting all the time (loose coil windings) or start grating (distortion of the coil former). Any one of these and you will either need new speakers or a recone. If you want to continue driving them so hard, a re-cone will have little point as you will only blow them again, so I would recommend replacement with higher rating.
From your other post here, I guess you are looking at new speakers anyway. If you rely on these speakers in any way, I would get them changed asap!
