Without ever having tried that particular combination, I will say that the secret is probably in the bass-ackwards Roland manual- when there's trouble syncing a VS series box with anything, it's always the VS.

VS setup...MTC should be set to master or slave..depending on which unit you want to press to have start everything...SysEx TX and RX should be set to ON...
Digi001...Show Session Setup..send MTC to port..whatever your MIDI port is and whatever port MIDI cables are hooked up to is what you set...
I cant remember Pro Tools LE enough right now to remember all the places you need to set to get sync to happen..maybe one of the fellow Digi001 guys could help you there...
