Last week i switched from a 5 year old 350 atlon xp 32bit to windows 7 I-3 dual core 64bit cause my workhorse finally went black.We were recording a bass track and i heard a zzzzit and that was the end of last saturdy night.
The new computer is great, no driver issues with any of my plugs or the zed R16 driver and i did the usual tweaks.
Disabled all non relative services.
Nothing loading on statup.
Never sleep,never turn off,no screen saver.
No retore points,just one backup image.
No security and no "do you want to allow this program"promt.(that one really bugs me).
My questions:
Am i missing any,is windows 7 different in optimizing performance.
and
What's the gain with 64 bit as opposed to 32 ..what's it do? run quicker,more efficent,make better use of the ram?
and
Single core,dual core..some macs have 8 cores, how many cores should i have to preserve my manhood?lol..What do they do?

The only thing I would have recommended different is to get an midlevel i5 or i7. The i3 will still be a big boost from the past especially with the bus speeds.
The only tweaks that you might not have done is to disable any power maintenance programs in the Device Manager like ACPI or helper programs from the manufacturer.
The great thing about buying from london drugs here in canada is you have a 15 day return/exchange policy.
Can you tell me more about the I5/I7. is it worth it? cause this will be my recording computer for awhile.I don't mind spending more money.

The i5 is a very solid performer. It competes with the i7 up to a certain level. The Gulftown i7-980 is the schizzle right now. Too expensive for my blood. I am looking at some laptops to upgrade my Dell D820 and I was looking at some with the i7-840. Like you, I expect my computers to last a long time.

Your new system is pretty good. You won't be changing the processor without changing the motherboard so I wouldn't worry about number or cores. Win7 actually requires less optimization than XP IMO.
