The debate between using standard 500k pots vs using higher value 1M pots has been raging... (yes it has, shut up) and I intend to shed some light on the situation. I swapped my pots this morning, but before I did I took DI's. After I put the 500k's in I made more DI's and then reamped all of them. Let me know what you hear, what you like, and why.

GF:
As you may or may not know....I'm not a huge metal fan....but I really liked that tone and sound!
It was real crunchy but smooth and not "grating" to my ears at all....which is something I hear a lot and don't like about metal guitar sound....of course that's just me and FWIW.
Not sure what the 1M pot is doing....I think the higher pot value puts less load on your pickup.

Thanks! I do reamping as well, so if anyone is interested in some reamping PM me and I'll do my best. Actually the higher resistance value puts more load on the pickup. It helps to preserve the highs and add a little bit of headroom and signal fidelity. On the downside, I think it shifts the resonant peak upwards and makes the sound a little thinner and not as full bodied. Now that I hear them side by side, I prefer the 500k, but with tone being so subjective it is really up to the listener and the user. I think people could be happy with either tone to be honest.

I like the title of your post, GF. My vote is for Maui Wowie. Seriously, you should check out Dan Torres' website (Torres Engineering) and see how and why the potentiometer values interact with different pick-ups and what the net results are.
In general, I would not use a 1Meg on a singlecoil pup just because I have never cared for having an icepick shoved into my ear...
