Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could help me for a sec.
I just recently started to use my pc for recording. I didn't have a huge budget so I bought the Audiophile 2496 soundcard because it was recomended to me as one of the best starter cards out there.
Well my system keeps locking up whenever I do anything with the card. I mean a few crashes when I have 20 tracks streaming at once I suppose I could understand. But this thing isn't stable enough to run winamp! I mean a $200 dollar card that can't play Mp3's?
When it crashes it will make this really awful noise through the monitors, sorta like an oven timer, I guess an infinite loop or something.
It locks up solid too, NO CTRL-ATL-DEL or anything.
I have tried every operating system I own with this thing, except for linux, which isn't practical for me right now. I have tried the new drivers and all the tweaks I can find everywhere. I just can't figure it out.
My system
AMD Athlon 1200 mhz CPU
on a matsonic MB with Via kt133 chipset
128 MB of ram (I have a feeling this could be making it worse)
Nvidia GeForce2 400 video card

No I am not eddie. :D I don't think I would be worried about recording if I was, I would just hop over to 5150 and jam...
As for the IRQ's, no I do not know how to assign them manually, but I have the card on it's own IRQ because I disabled ACPI and moved the card until it was on an isolated IRQ.
Just a little update I think I may know the main cause of the problem. I opened a cache program while I started up Cubase, and the memory usage jumped up to 85%, that is just with the program in memory, no tracks/effects and such....that don't leave a whole lot of room...

Having said that, have you tried installing VIA's latest 4-in-one drivers? You can get them HERE .
After trying that, you may want to check for a BIOS revision to that motherboard.
Your system specs are more than adequate, but your motherboard may be incompatible with your sound card (or any other PCI bus intensive cards).
The Audiophile should be a great sounding card, especially because it has the upgraded AKM codecs, the same as the RME Hammerfall card.

wolfhalen, do you know how to manually assign IRQs on your motherboard and ensure that the audio card is not plugged into one of the "shared IRQ" slots?
