Looking for some insight here. I currently have a P4B266 1.0 gig PIV with two IBM deskstar drives, Matrox G550 video, Aardvark Q10, etc. One HD for the OS and one for sound stuff. I use Sonar and Waves plugins, Win2000 OS.
Time for a new computer for the kids, so I plan to take advantage and upgrade mine and and build the new one partly from old parts. I plan on getting a new ASUS P4C800 board and a 2.5 PIV processor for the recording box. At the same time I'd like to get a WD 40gig 8mb cache OS drive for this one as well. Use the deskstar OS drive, motherboard, CPU and memory for the kids box.
So the questions are...
Can I reinstall everything on the new OS drive and somehow sucessfully point it to the old sound drive? Before everything was installed on the OS drive and the sound drive was just used to store files. I'm not sure how this would work for Sonar. With the new install of everything (OS and Sonar) will previous files open and resync the sound and MIDI components?
The new OS drive, without a lot of rehash (I've read everything I could find, no real conclusive end)setup with Win2000 in standard PC mode? Good? Sanity check.
I couldn't figure it out, any reason to spend the extra few bucks for the P4C800-E?

THe cpu is a P4 2.4 ghz 512k socket 478 hyper threading 800 mhz fsb.

I bring up the syncing issue because the current computer has OS named G: and the other hd named H:. Long story about a bad conversion last time around. Anyway this time I just needed a sanity check. Setup the new OS drive as C:. With this shift I was wondering if everything would sync up.
On the two motherboards, it looks like the only difference is the manf of the LAN chip. Does seem to add up.

The OS drive will automatically become the C drive, so no need to try and make it that letter!
The data drive will most likely get a new drive letter but it may retain the old one...in the long run it won't matter...the computer will see it regardless!
If you need to run gigabit Lan then go for it..but otherwise Lan is Lan unless you plan on doing some serious networking or wireless.
Personally for a DAW machine you should just stick to regular ethernet as to not hog too many resources!

The Asus board you are looking at is the one with the 800Mhz FSB and you should get an 800Mhz CPU to match it. Don't under run the boards capabilities! That's my first recommendation.
The E has more functions on it as far as peripherals. Do you need the extra peripherals? If not then don't get it! :D
The data drive is just that..no need to repoint anything to it...the system will recognize it asnd the application will see it as well.
With Win2K and that style motherboard you should install it as ACPI mode. Better support.
In the long run I would go with Windows XP as it's a more stable OS!
