Hello,

Im very new to the forum thing, but it's worth the try.
Im currently using a Digi 003 and have a couple of
PreSonus 26•26 firestudios. I wanna upgrade to a better
sound.

What would u suggest? I was looking a MOTU HD 192
system or even a nice pro tools had system(used)
And if it's in the price range. Thanks and please help!

That looks nice,

I'd buy a StudioLive 16.4.2 or 24.4.2 or the new 32.4.2(coming this summer) and Studio One 2 and be done with it. But, if you are going digi, just buy a complete used HD system. Or, step up your game all together and get away from Avid. Invest in better micpres, gear etc. $$$ and stay away from the converters with pre's like you have. Go modular and pick pieces you can sell, trade, build as you go.

"Better sound" comes from a lot of directions and not all of them involve purchasing new gear. Hows your room acoustically? How's your mic technique? Are you running out of tracks for your projects? If so, why? What is the nature of your desire for"better sound"? What I mean by this is where do you 'hear' the lack or what is the nature of this 'lack'?

A lot of people get into this business (not necessarily as a 'business) and get only a short ways into the internal aspects of creating quality sound and do so without any real knowledge of the most important factors of this before they start trying to improve their sound with purchases that may or may not give the results they wish for. You could be a completely seasoned pro for all I know and this will fall on deaf ears, but your post doesnt really address this so this is my standard line of response....ESPECIALLY to newer users of gear. My appologies if this doesnt pertain to you but these are questions even a seasoned pro should ask before spending bunch of cash.

You had mentioned PT HD and conversion to 192 so I will assume you have done some market research and are aware that systems like this are cheaper now than ever before. I upgraded recently but I left my core system at PT 9 and an 003 factory simply because in a couple of years all the HD and legacy systems will be unsupported. Probably something that Chris's suggestion of getting away from Avid has to do with (plus he doesnt like the PT sound). When I do upgrade my core I will be looking at open end architecture. That is something that is coming. There is so much information and misinformation that rooting through all of it to get to truth is a full-time job!

I have friends and acquaintences in this business and there is a myriad of opinions about what is best and what will be best in the coming years. Some are successful and swear that a basic PT HD system with great clocking is all you'll ever need for Rock and Pop styles of music. Others swear that only the finest in headroom and conversion will do for their Classical and orchestral captures. Others have thriving businesses and havent moved past PT7 and a 24/48 system but have rooms that sound great and outboard that you could feed a block of families with the price of for a year.

So theres a lot of aspects to "better sound"..."what would you suggest".

but, FWIW, I usually stay around 44.1 or 88.2. Never seem to need anything beyond that. Everything becomes a big headache managing files that end up sounding like the internet in the end. Plus, everything seems to run smoother 96 and below. Sounds like you got that one figured out.

You know whats funny Dave, my system is so huge sounding now I need to buy gear to squash it down to fit lol. ROTF.

lol, I have one of those beautiful Herman Miller chairs you all rave about but it doesn't do it for me, Its parked in the spare room. It looks nice and is comfy but you can't play guitar in it either. And, I don't like anything behind my ears. I could hear a reflection from the high back right away. They are comfortable though!

HehHeh....I have a Mirra. I liked it better than the Aerodyne as the arms fold down lower for this "guitar playing" you speak of. I also have an Ergon and an Equa both with the arms removed, The Equa stays in the office. Patty's orders. M-u-s-t o-b-e-y..........

The Mirra is in my mix position lower back than the Aerodyne and wider. I also like the poly material as mesh better than the Aerodyne.

So all you guys just building up to this....GET A GREAT CHAIR! really.....
