Havin' trouble mixing a HEAVY rock band. I know a bit about leaving room for frequencies, but I'm a little stumped on this one.

The band has two guitars (tuned down a few steps), a bass (also tuned down), and busy drum parts. I suppose the good news is the singing is higher pitched screaming (no cookie monster vox).

Is there any advantage to mix, and or process the center channel information on a seperate bus?

I have an idea that we need terrible gear:-

It's so easy now to get hold of great sounding gear - lush reverbs, linear mics, etc. but is this a good thing?

If every single track is recorded at maximum quality and clarity don't mixes get choked so that everything competes for the attention?

Just wanted to let you guys know that I'm a new Logic 4.5 user. I'm wondering if I have any questions can they and will they be answered here?

Computer (now) PC, Pentium 266, 198 mb ram, Maxtor 5400 10 gig harddrive, Soundblaster Live Value, 17 Inch monitor

Keyboard (Radio Shack MD-1200) (don't laugh it has midi and autoaccompaniment)

How important are quality compressors to the mixdown process for rock n roll? I love the subtle ways that a compressor can fool the ear, but I'm far from an expert on some of the tricks of the trade.

Which compression techniques do you find to be the most useful? Are there certain tricks you almost ALWAYS use?

Does anyone know if Chuck shut the greatidea website down? Can't seem to get any response from the server at all today.
