I sow many rappers (on tv mostly...lol) when recording put they mic upside down... why?

Let me preface this by saying that some of this has been covered in other posts. However, as a beginner it would be useful to have a sticky post dedicated to Micing the different kinds on instruments. I would like to know which mics sound best on a particular kind of instrument, and how they should be placed.

I recorded a group of people singing a Christmas carol last season. I used 2 mics (L and R). The person that did this with me recommended setting each mic to a stereo channel. What's the advantage of that vs a mono track for each mic?

I just don't get it :?

What is the word on the street about the Neumann KM 183 d? I only found one page on the net with any sort of review. Does anyone here have one? How does it compare to other quality omnis, like Schoeps? Would it be good for recording organ, or choir?

I've been out of the narration business for 15+ years...fell into a wormhole and am back in.

I would like to get a list of the best microphones for two different applications:

* a narrator's booth
* a quality music studio

Ironically, I have recorded friends bands and my own band that have half stacks with huge live sounds, using top of the line hughes and kettner, Mesa Boogie, and Peavy amps and cabs. Most of this is rock, hardcore, metal. etc. They sound HUGE live, talk about a show in a coffee shop.

I've always used SM57 and SM58 for live vocal mics. Good mics no doubt, but I've begun to consider gettting something different.
My main gripe with the 57/58 is its tight pattern, I feel like I have to eat the mic, plus I play guitar while singing, which makes working the mic even hard, since I can't hold it.
