New DAW suffering sound dropouts from some channels

I just built a new DAW. When I load my old projects into Cubase SX3 (3.11) and/or Logic 5.5 or create new projects I find myself suffering random audio dropouts on some channels of the sequencer but not others. The problem seems to occur on VST instrument channels as appose to audio tracks. The dropouts occur roughly once a minute during playback of a project.

Equalizing Through Pro Tools or Vacuum Tube EQ?

I wanted to get some input on which you feel is a more effective and overall better sounding EQ. I'm currently training with a mentor in a small yet fairly reputable studio who says it's usually a matter of preference. From my personal experience, it seems like you would want to try to stay away from as much digital doctoring of a voice as possible?

Large or small Diaphragm ?

I have (in my short life as a recording enthusiast) always used a pair of c1000,s as overheads but I have primarily used them to mic up the cymbals (rolling off everything below 500hz).
I am now trying to progress and to purchase 2 mics that I can use as true overheads. I want two mics that will give a good sound of the whole kit so that all I need to add is a kick and snare mic.

Differences between Pro Tools and Cubase

Hey, let me start by saying I'm completely new to computer recording and I'm needing help getting set up. I'm looking to spend about $700 (maybe $800) for a small setup. I know I'll need software, and interface, a mic, monitors, and a midi keyboard. However, I've already got decent monitors and I'm hoping I can forego the keyboard for a while.

Should I wait for Pro Tools support in Vista?

Here is my situation. I am definitely buying a laptop for recording purposes and also want to get Pro Tools with the digi003. Right now my only option is to buy a new macbook pro (new models were released this week). However, I recently read that Pro Tools will be supported by vista sometime this summer. Now I don't know if I should get a vista based laptop or a macbook pro.
