Building my first "studio"

Hello all. I've been waiting to jump into the world of recording for a while now. I don't have a lot of money, and it will mainly be used for my own purposes (not trying to get paying customers or anything! at least not for a long while) so I won't be buying top of the line equipment. I want to know what you guys think as far as where "budget" gear turns to "crap" gear.

Help on a project panning parts etc... open for suggestions

My situation

How do you get audio to sound pro studio CD ready quality. I do the mixing right, i play all the parts right, and I master with all the best plugins, but then i have noise issues and problems hearing other parts in the mix I need help with panning these parts and/or using some of these plugging s i have to touch it up to sound great

You have 3,000 bucks. what do you do with it?

Ok, so there's the situation.

A good friend of mine has just built a loverly, beautiful little PC and now we need the hardware to go with it. We have a pretty big location project in Wales coming up in September and we are looking at complete solutions for multitrack i/o. With budget of around 3,000 pounds, what would you go with? All ideas and suggestions greatly appreciated!

EQ Plugins cause Phase Shifting?

Hey All, I just started to wonder about this as I was reading a thread on the Sonar user's forum. Hardware EQ does cause phase shifting because of the reactive components (capacitors and inductors) in the circuitry. What about software versions? I'm curious to know how the algorithms effect frequency in the virtual world. Is it by manipulating the time line aka phase?
