Okay, so there's no doubt about it, as classical recordists, we are as out of place in the recording world as a Mercedes at a Kia dealership. (Not equating rock recordists to Kias - though they are some of the best backed cars in the world 8-) )

Just thought I'd share my thoughts. I got to try out my new C42's as drum overheads and on acoustic this weekend. I think they are fantastic. I used some Neumann KM184's a while back (or were they 183's. ?), and going from memory I think the Josephson's compare quite favorably. I still might prefer the Neumann's for some things, but I really liked the C42's for what I was doing.

Looks like I will be helping out with a symphony recording soon and the plan is to use a Decca Tree with Schoeps mk21's. I have read discussions of the Decca Tree where people suggest aiming the 'front' of the omni mics inward/downward towards the orchestra. The reason given for this is that even omnis become directional at higher frequencies.

Big studios are dropping like flies! Does anyone have the inside scoop on why they are going out? You can't tell me with a straight face that it is ONLY the home studio that is killing the commercial studio. Yes I get good results on my $15k set up, but it doesn't touch a Neve or SSL with the drums going to tape!

This may make me sound a bit dumb, but if I disable the EQ and Compression in the Thorax, in essence just using it as a pre-amp, is that pre-amp identical to the VMP1000e?

I'm thinking I'd like a VMP and a Thorax, but if I get them both with the Thorax, I just might pony up the extra $$$.
